Water Conservation

By Braxton Gries—Lead Compliance Manager // 2022-10-10

What is Water Conservation? Water conservation, is the practice of controlling, preserving, and effectively managing water resources. This has become an essential practice in many regions of the world, even in areas where water appears to be ample and abundant. What are the Water-related problems facing the world today? Water shortage, lack of clean water, and water borne diseases to name a few. Approximately 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water on a daily basis and water demand only continues to grow, nearly sixfold, in the past 70 years.

On a construction site we see many uses of water from basic stabilization of soils, water used in concrete, paving, and wall building operations, the water systems installed into buildings and for parks or irrigation, the list continues. The construction industry uses a considerable amount of water over any given project life cycle and many companies lack adequate measures to reduce excessive consumption. Driving awareness towards water conservation should be prioritized at all stages of a project, even in pre-planning and design. Basic behavior changes like using a bucket of water to clean rather than running water, sweeping sidewalks instead of spraying down, or using harvested rainwater in any number of methods are just a few ways an individual can make a difference. Lastly, managing soils, cement slurry, and other potential pollutants, from washing down storm water systems will help preserve the water ways of the US and keep them clean.
